Safety precaution 1

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Because West Hydrated Lime is an alkaline material, proper protective gear is non-negotiable.

  • Eye Protection: Always wear tight-fitting chemical safety goggles to prevent dust from entering the eyes, which can cause severe irritation or corneal damage.

  • Hand & Body Protection: Wear alkali-resistant gloves (such as nitrile or rubber) and long-sleeved clothing to minimize direct skin contact.

Handling & Exposure Prevention

Minimizing exposure is key to maintaining a safe work environment.

  • Respiratory Safety: Avoid inhaling dust. In enclosed or dusty areas, use a NIOSH-approved dust mask (N95 or higher) or a respirator to prevent respiratory tract irritation.

  • Skin Contact: If the powder comes into contact with skin, brush it off immediately and wash the area with soap and water. Hydrated lime can cause dry skin or chemical burns upon prolonged contact with perspiration.

Storage & Warehousing

Proper storage ensures product longevity and safety.

  • Moisture Control: Store in a cool, dry, and weather-proof area. Although hydrated lime is stable, exposure to moisture can cause caking and degradation.

  • Ventilation & Segregation: Ensure the storage area is well-ventilated. Keep the product away from incompatible materials, specifically acids, as reaction with acids generates heat. Keep containers tightly closed to prevent absorption of carbon dioxide (air-slaking).
